Because it is a very high unique but moderately-priced ultra wide angle zoom lens, the Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM Lens is one of Canon"s best selling lenses.

Bạn đang xem: Lifetime review of the canon ef 17

The 17-40 f/4L fills out the bottom focal length range of Canon"s f/4L zoom lens series. It is the lightest L lens currently made (1.1 lbs / 475g) and is the smallest L zoom lens currently produced (3.3" x 3.8" / 83.5mm x 96.8mm - Dx
L).

As indicated by the "ultra wide angle" designation, the 17-40mm focal length is ultra wide on a full-frame DSLR.Let"s take a look at a focal length comparison.

*

17mm | 30mm | 40mm

I know, the 30mm focal length is a somewhat unusual choice for this comparison, but ... I didn"t plan khổng lồ use this mix of images this way - I was just shooting the scene.Obviously, 17mm is vastly wider than 40mm.

Utilizing Ring USM, the Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM Lens focuses very fast, quietly & accurately. The focus and zoom rings are nicely sized, turn smoothly & are nicely damped. This lens does not extend with a very small exception - the objective end lens elements move in/out slightly inside the lens barrel during focusing. The movement is 100% behind the filter threads. If you have a filter installed, you will have no external movement.Since the filter attaches to lớn the fixed lens barrel - the filter also does not rotate.Circular Polarizer Filter and split/graduated neutral density filter users will care about this. The common 77mm filter threads make sharing filters with many of Canon"s complementing lenses easy. The 17-40 L is weather-sealed but requires a UV Filter khổng lồ complete the sealing.

Wide open center of the frame sharpness ranges from great on the wide end to good on the long end.Wide mở cửa corner sharpness is also relatively good, but as usual, the corners are not as sharp as the center.Stopping the 17-40 L down to f/5.6 brings along a nice improvement in sharpness.Common landscape apertures f/8 through f/11 look very good.

The 17-40 L resists flare very well.Colors và contrast are very good.CA (Chromatic Aberration) is very well controlled, though some can be expected in the corners below 24mm.Distortion ranges from moderately strong barrel distortion at 17mm to mild pincushion at 40mm with 24mm being the approximate point of minimal distortion. As usual, closer distances resulted in stronger distortion and significantly less distortion will be noticeable on1.6x FOVCF bodies. You will likely notice the barrel distortion in the full-frame 17mm ISO 12233 resolution chart sample crops.

A 7-blade circular aperture delivers excellent OOF (Out of Focus) blur quality. But, unless you have a close subject và a wide aperture, vì chưng not expect a diffusely blurred background withthis ultra-wide angle focal length range và moderate maximum aperture opening.

Vignetting will be a non-issue when the 17-40 L is mounted on 1.6x FOVCF bodies.Full frame toàn thân users will see vignetting ranging from very strong at 17mm f/4 to not bad at 40mm f/4 & 17mm f/8(improvements gained with focal length increase và aperture opening reduction).A standard thickness UV filter shows little or no additional vignetting regardless of the camera body toàn thân being used. However, you will likely want a slim circular polarizing filter.

Although not as fast as the Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L lens, the Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM Lens is a comparable lens in terms of image quality. The biggest difference between the 17-40 & the similar-focal-length-covering 16-35 L is price. The 17-40 is much less expensive - practically half the price. But of course, the 16-35 is able khổng lồ let in twice as much light.See the Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM Lens đánh giá for a comparison lớn the newer 16-35 L Lens version.

At its closest-focusing-distance of 11" (280mm), the 17-40 L delivers a very respectable maximum magnification of .25x at 40mm.Zooming out to 17mm at this distance will yield a dramatic perspective.Adding extension tubes to the equation shortens the closest focusing distance and delivers significant (macro-realm) .83x and 1.02x maximum magnifications for 12mm & 25mm tubes respectively.

As you expect from an "L" lens, the 17-40"s build quality is very high.Focus and zoom rings are nicely sized, nicely positioned & turn smoothly. The kích thước and shape make it a great-handling lens. And being the lightest-at-this-time L lens, the 17-40 L does not carry a weight penalty for this quality.

This is an easy-to-take-with-you lens.

The 17-40 L ships with a Canon EW-83E lens hood và a Canon LP1319 soft lens pouch. The shape of the hood (very wide và very short) makes one question whether it actually helps. It does almost nothing for lens protection - and nearly nothing for image unique when used on a 1.6x FOVCF body.It also makes storage inefficient. With the hood removed, the 17-40 easily fits in a relatively small Lowepro Lens Case 1W.To accommodate the diameter of the hood installed, the 17-40 requires a relatively large Lowepro Lens Case 4S.

Since 1.6x camera bodies vì chưng not need all of the image this lens presents, a more-light-reducing lens hood can be used.Friends of the site have reported that the Canon EF 24mm f/1.4L Lens" EW-83DII lens hood và the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS Lens" EW-83H work well as alternatives for these bodies.I tested the EW-83J from the Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS Lens & it seems khổng lồ work fine on the 17-40. It fits and does not cause vignetting at 17mm & f/4. It looks a lot better as well.

Be sure to read my Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM lens reviewto determine which of these Canon Ultra Wide Angle lenses is right for you.In brief - If you are going to shoot primarily with narrow apertures or your budget is restricted, the decision is easy - get the Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM Lens.If you need to lớn shoot in low light conditions such as indoors without a flash or tripod, then the 16-35 L II is a better choice (you need at least f/2.8 - or image stabilization for motionless subjects). If you vị not need full-frame compatibility, rugged build chất lượng or environmental sealing, the newer
Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM is another great solution.

I frequently recommend the Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM Lens as a general purpose lensfor those with a 1.6x FOVCF (field of view crop factor) camera that want the best image chất lượng for a reasonable price. The focal length range of this lens is not dramatic, but on a 1.6x body, the full-frame equivalent 27.2-64mm lens can handle many general purpose needs.Good full-frame compatibility and performance make the 17-40 L an especially good lens for those thinking of upgrading to lớn such a toàn thân in the future. The 17-40 L makes a great second or third lens in a full frame kit.

Wide landscape photography is a very popular use for this lens
Use wide angles lớn emphasize an object in the foreground against an attractive (and mostly in-focus) background.Or use it lớn simply take in a very wide field of view.Shoot your garden landscape, the lake, large mountains ...

Architecture và real estate photography often have large subjects that require wide angle lenses. These are many more good uses for the 17-40 L.You may need lớn remove the barrel distortion from 17mm shots during post-processing if straight lines are present near the edges of the frame.

Other situations that require you to lớn work in a tight space may be right for the 17-40 L.

Although the 17-40 L can be a good people lens, it is not a good short-distance people lens.A head shot from this lens will emphasize the subject"s nose more than the subject will want. The 17-40mm focal length range is great for group pictures, environmental portraits & full body pictures.Stand back and make a person part of a wide landscape shot.If tighter portraits are your interest, look for a lens that gives you at least an 85mm - 135mm equivalent focal length. The captures of your important subject will be more pleasing.

Of course, that close-up wide angle portrait look is fun lớn use sometimes.Just don"t overdo it.

As with any other general purpose/ultra wide angle lens, this lens has far more uses than I am going to lớn think of.But if you want a great wide angle lens for an attractive price, the Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM Lens is a very good choice.

I use these stores. I can"t vouch for ads below.

Read the rest of this đánh giá if you like, or stop here and know that I bought a Canon 17-40mm f/4 L for myself after having it and the more expensive Canon 16-35mm f/2.8 L on loan for a month.

The 17-40mm f/4 L is a better, lighter & newer lens than the fatter và more expensive 16-35mm. (I still look forward khổng lồ trying the even more expensive & heavier 16-35mm f/2.8 L II.)

I"ll forgo the wider view for an overall larger zoom range, more consistent optical performance và less weight.

Good News:

1.) Excellent optics.

2.) Consistent results.

3.) Inexpensive (for this class).

4.) Light weight.

5.) Well made.

6.) The largest zoom ratio of any ultrawide: 2.4 : 1 (40/17 = 2.4).

Bad News:

Not much , so I"m reaching for:

1.) More ghosts than the 10-22mm EF-S, but less than the 16-35mm L.

2.) Complex distortion, typical of every other superwide zoom, difficult lớn remove if you"re trying to lớn replace a view camera. Easily corrected with Dx
O software.

Basics

This is my favorite ultra-wide lens because, on my Canon 5D full-frame, it"s sharper than my Nikon 12-24mm on my D200 & sharper than the Canon 10-22mm on a Rebel XTi.

It weighs much less, cost less than half as much và gives me more consistently sharp results than the Canon 16-35mm f/2.8 L.

It"s also wider than the Nikon lens on Nikon. It"s not quite as wide as the 10-22mm on Canon 1.6x cameras and not as wide as the 16-35mm. If you need the widest possible zoom, that"s the 16-35mm L on a full-frame camera.

This 17-40mm L lens is for full-frame, film & 1.3x cameras lượt thích the 1D series.

The17-40mm f/4 and 16-35mm f/2.8 work great on the 1.6x sensor cameras (Rebel, 30D, 20D), but for those cameras the 18-55mm EF-S lens, for one sixth the price, is lighter & more agile. None of these is wide on a 1.6x camera. Even this 17-40mm on a 1.6x camera only covers a range similar lớn what a 27-65mm lens would on a 35mm film camera. For these 1.6x cameras, you have an easy choice: get the 10-22mm EF-S, which covers the same range on those cameras as a 16-35mm lens covers on full-frame cameras.

Since this 17-40mm L và the 16-35mm L vị the same thing on full-frame cameras that the 10-22mm EF-S does on 1.6x cameras, I"ll be making constant comparisons among them throughout this review.

Name

Canon calls this the Canon Zoom Lens EF 17-40mm f/4 L USM. This means:

EF: Electronic Focus. All modern Canon lenses vị this.

L: Expensive.

USM: Ultra-Sonic Motor: It focuses silently.

Focal Length: 17-40mm.

Used on a 1.3x camera it gives angles of view similar to lớn what a 21-50mm lens would give on a 35mm film camera. On a 1.6x camera it gives angles of view similar to lớn what a 28-65mm lens would give on a 35mm film camera. O

Maximum Aperture

f/4 at all focal lengths.

Optics

12 elements in 9 groups, including three aspherics & one of UD glass. UD glass is the same as Nikon"s ED glass, which helps reduce màu sắc fringing.

Diaphragm

7 mostly straight blades stopping down khổng lồ f/22.

Filter Size

77mm, the pro standard. Plastic filter threads. There"s also a gel holder on the rear.

Close Focus

11" (0.28m) from the image plane (the back of the camera). Since the lens sticks out 5-1/2" (14cm) from the image plane, that means I measured close focus at only 5-1/4" (13 cm) in front of the lens!

Hood

EW-83E for full-frame cameras. Try a smaller hood lượt thích the EW-83DII for smaller sensor cameras. (Same as 16-35mm.)

Case

LP1319. (Same as 16-35mm.)

OVERALL

It"s a great lens. For less money than many other lenses, it offers better performance.

FOCUSING

back lớn Performance or back to Introduction.

Like most wide lenses, the focus is fast & accurate. No problems here.

Speed

AF tốc độ is more than enough, at least for me.

Sound và Noise

It"s almost silent.

Manual Focus: Plastic on plastic.

Autofocus: About the same: plastic on plastic.

Ease-of-Focusing

Excellent.

Autofocus Accuracy

I usually get perfect autofocus. It"s unusual to lớn get a miss, although it will happen. It is much better than the 16-35mm L I tried.

There is no offset, except at one foot where it tends to focus a little past the subject at 40mm.

Manual Focus

Just grab the ring at any time, no need lớn move any switches. If you don"t want AF, set the AF / MF switch khổng lồ MF.

Focus Breathing

Breathing is a motion picture term which refers to what happens as you pull (change) focus from near to far. In movies we bởi vì this as the conversation goes from one actor to the next. As a viewer you don"t notice it because your eyes are also going between actors, but if you pay attention, you can see focus move from near to lớn far. There are people called focus pullers whose sole job is to bởi vì this.

It doesn"t matter in still photography, but I look for it.

Ideally nothing happens và the image kích cỡ doesn"t change when focus is pulled from near lớn far. This distracts audiences if the image changes form size slightly as the conversation goes from actor lớn actor.

The Canon 17-40mm f/4 L does a little weird thing I"ve seen in my Nikon 17-35mm zoom và the Canon 16-35mm L: look at a line along the bottom of the frame as you focus at the wide end và you"ll see it change shape as the distortion changes!

Fun, but not significant.

BOKEH

back khổng lồ Performance or back to Introduction.

Bokeh is OK in the center, but sloppy in the corners. It"s better at the large apertures, & looks worst in the corners stopped down a bit. As an aspherical optic, it will vì chưng weird things.

Bokeh is never a big khuyễn mãi giảm giá for ultra wides since everything is usually in focus, but if you have a subject one foot away (my hand) here"s what you"ll see:
